Bryce Kanights on skateboarding and images: “It ties everything together”

Kanight began taking pictures a couple of years after he began skating. He turned Thrasher journal’s first intern, working with them for a few years alongside his work with giant manufacturers, and even photographs tailored into Mob Grip board designs.

Through his eye, the evolving generations of youth tradition by way of skateboarding, proper by way of to its Olympic standing, have been captured.

As a self-crafted sport normally current on the margins of tradition, the Skateboarding Hall of Fame museum serves to honour the historical past, figures, and publications which have influenced its growth.  He was inducted with an Icon Award final month.

“My dad was a hobbyist, so we had his photos on the wall; they influenced me. But also skateboarding magazines, seeing those action photos of Craig Stecyk, James Cassimus, and Glen Friedman. I was like, ‘I need to replicate that’,” he mentioned.

“You have to have the action,” he added of the photographing ability. “It can be any trick, it’s just how you move your eye through the frame using the skateboarder. You see where they’re coming from, where they’re going to.”

He is the third photographer to be named within the Hall of Fame, from his private inspiration Glen E. Friedman in 2012, and J Grant Brittain in 2014.

“I still can’t believe it,” he mentioned. “It’s an honour for it to be something I’ve been doing since I was a little kid. I’m proud.”
