Markings that seem to point out the numbers “86 47” seen on National Mall in Washington

Washington — Markings appeared on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on Thursday that appear to depict the numbers “86 47,” in accordance with photographs taken from the highest of the Washington Monument.

A photographer for the Reuters information outlet noticed the obvious markings simply earlier than federal authorities arrived to look into the incident, according to the wire service. Photos taken by the Reuters photographer present the faint tracings of “86 47” within the grass with the World War II Memorial within the background.

The “8” seems most prominently, whereas the “6” and “7” will be seen much less clearly. The quantity “4” is the least seen within the photographs. It was not instantly clear how the markings had been made or who made them. 

The U.S. Park Police stated, “At approximately 11:30 a.m., U.S. Park Police responded to a report of vandalism of the west lawn of the Washington Monument. The numbers ‘8647’ were marked in the grass. The cause of the discoloration has not yet been determined. Grass samples have been collected for testing. The investigation is ongoing.”

A spokesperson for the Interior Department stated, “The deranged vandalism on our National Mall will not be tolerated. Any threat against the President is taken very seriously by the Department, and our U.S. Park Police will investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable.” 

“Anyone who engages in or endorses political violence or assassination culture must be condemned in the harshest terms possible,” White House spokesperson Davis Ingle informed CBS News in an announcement in response to the markings. “They should also immediately seek psychiatric help to treat their severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has warped their brains and made them sick in the head.”

The time period “86” is slang which means to “throw out” or “get rid of,” according to Merriam-Webster. The phrase is often utilized in restaurant kitchens and originated at soda counters within the Nineteen Thirties, in accordance with the dictionary. But the time period gained extra consideration lately when former FBI Director James Comey was indicted after sharing an Instagram publish final 12 months that confirmed seashells on the seashore organized to type “86 47.”
