HENRICO, Va. (WWBT) – Henrico Police are investigating a possible drowning after a 9-year-old boy died Monday afternoon.
On June 15, round 2:40 p.m., Henrico Police responded to the 300 block of N. Wilkinson Road for a reported medical emergency.
“Once on scene, officers located a juvenile male (9) who was unresponsive after being pulled out of a pool. Prior to first responders arriving on scene, staff at the facility provided care to the child,“ Henrico Police said in a release.
The boy was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
SwimRVA released the following statement regarding the incident:
“It is with profound sadness that we report that at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 15, a participant in our summer camp was unresponsive after being removed from the pool.
Pool staff immediately began CPR and continued lifesaving efforts until paramedics and County Fire Department personnel arrived and assumed care. The child was transported to the hospital, where he passed away.
Our hearts are with the child’s family and loved ones during this loss. We extend our deepest condolences and are keeping them and all those affected by this tragedy in our thoughts.
We are cooperating fully with the appropriate authorities as they review the circumstances surrounding this incident.”
One parent, who didn’t want to be identified, recounted the scene at Swim RVA North that afternoon as she picked up her 6-year-old son from swim camp.
“A lot of Henrico police cars and officers at the back… I went into the camp facility and asked what had happened and they would only share that there was an incident,” the dad or mum stated.
The parent told 12 On Your Side multiple children there said someone had drowned during free swim.
Henrico Police say the medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
As questions around the incident remain, it’s leaving one parent terrified.
“This was a camp we were excited to go to because they have two swim lessons a day and it was early in the summer, it was a good opportunity for him to improve his swimming skills,” the dad or mum stated. “But now, not knowing what happened, I’m very reluctant to go back.”
