This July, almost 100 pictures from the University of Arizona Center for Creative Photography journey north to Phoenix for “Ecstatic Time: The Alchemy of Photography,” an unique exhibition opening July 29 at Phoenix Art Museum.

Organized by Phoenix Art Museum and CCP, the exhibition explores how the medium shapes, transforms, and reimagines actuality reasonably than merely recording it. “Ecstatic Time” additionally marks the Twentieth anniversary of the Norton settlement, a landmark partnership established by Mr. and Mrs. John R. The exhibition was devised by Emilia Mickevicius, Norton Family Assistant Curator of Photography at Phoenix Art Museum and the Center for Creative Photography. Mickevicius started constructing its basis informally — sustaining a operating database of objects that startled or delighted her throughout visits to the CCP storage vault.

“Every time I came across a particularly striking picture that startled or delighted me in some way, I’d add it to the group,” Mickevicius stated. “Eventually it dawned on me: what if this was the basis for an entire show? Rather than offering a chronological survey of the medium, the resulting exhibition invites viewers to encounter an unusual group of photographs that delight, puzzle and disrupt our sense of time and perception.”

Photography Beyond the Literal

The exhibition takes its title from movie theorist Hollis Frampton, who proposed that pictures give viewers entry to “ecstatic time” — an expertise distinct from historic or clock time. Derived from the Ancient Greek ékstasis, that means “to stand outside oneself,” the idea displays how pictures droop their topics from the continual circulation of lived expertise, inviting nearer and deeper trying.

Rather than providing a chronological survey, “Ecstatic Time” presents pictures spanning almost all the historical past of the medium — from Nineteenth-century prints to modern conceptual works — with specific emphasis on early Twentieth-century experimentation. Four Thematic Sections

The exhibition is organized into 4 thematic groupings, every approaching images’s relationship to time and notion from a special angle:

  • Awake and Dreaming brings collectively surreal and enigmatic Twentieth-century photos that orient viewers to the transformative nature of digital camera imaginative and prescient — together with strategies like flash images that freeze moments in time. Artists featured right here embrace Ilse Bing, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Kozo Miyoshi, and Garry Winogrand.

A Partnership Built to Last

For CCP Director Todd Tubutis, the exhibition displays the continued worth of the Norton settlement as a mannequin for extending the Center’s attain past its Tucson campus.

About the Exhibition

“Ecstatic Time: The Alchemy of Photography” is co-organized by Phoenix Art Museum and the Center for Creative Photography. All exhibitions at Phoenix Art Museum are underwritten by the Phoenix Art Museum ‘Exhibition Excellence Fund,’ discovered by The Opatrny Family Foundation with further assist offered by Joan Cremin.
