Leading as much as America’s 250th anniversary, Louisiana Public Broadcasting is rolling out a brand new authentic documentary, “Capturing America: The Carol Highsmith Story.” 

“A love for America shown through the lens of a camera, documentary photographer Carol Highsmith’s passion for both shines through,” LPB describes its newest movie venture.

Louisiana audiences will see the movie first, earlier than its nationwide PBS launch, when LPB premieres “Capturing America” at 7 p.m. Monday.

Highsmith’s love for America started at a younger age whereas touring throughout the nation by automobile. “I was a nomad from the moment go,” she says.

Her love of images led her on a lifelong mission to doc America by photographing folks and locations in all 50 states, in addition to the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

More than 40 years later, after numerous miles traveled, Highsmith has constructed a set anticipated to surpass 100,000 photographs. Her outstanding archive is housed on the Library of Congress and made accessible copyright-free and royalty-free to the general public.

The documentary slowly reveals Highsmith’s private story as audiences come to know the motivation behind her beneficiant present and share her love for America.
