PlayStation Ending Games on Bodily Discs in 2028

PlayStation will stop manufacturing of bodily discs for its video games starting with new titles releasing in 2028.

The information comes on the heels of Take-Two Interactive’s Rockstar Games revealing that “Grand Theft Auto 6” is not going to launch with a disc model, however quite the choice between a digital copy and a “code in a box” because the “physical” providing.

“As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028,” PlayStation’s senior director of content material communications, Sid Shuman, stated in an announcement published on the official PlayStation blog Wednesday. “Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.”

Sony famous that “this transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format,” a key one being PlayStation’s upcoming “Marvel’s Wolverine” this fall.

Shuman cited this transfer to stop disc manufacturing as “a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.”
