State program for wholesome youngsters coming to Herkimer HealthInternet

Children and their households in Herkimer County are about to get more healthy — if a state program does its job.

The New York State Department of Health’s Creating Healthy Schools and Communities program is investing $1.6 million in a five-year initiative to encourage more healthy decisions for the county’s kids.

Herkimer County HealthInternet will lead the initiative, however work with different teams to implement evidence-based methods to enhance well being.

“This investment will have a lasting impact on the health of children and families throughout Herkimer County,” mentioned Elyse Enea, HealthInternet’s govt director, in an announcement. “This grant is about creating lasting, community-wide change.

“By bringing together schools, municipalities, early childhood education providers and community organizations, we can create environments that support healthier lifestyles, expand opportunities for physical activity, improve access to nutritious foods, and help build healthier futures for children and families across Herkimer County.”

Central Valley Central School District Superintendent Jeremy Rich expressed optimism about the program’s ability to make a difference.

“This investment represents an incredible opportunity to strengthen the connection between health and learning for every child in Herkimer County,” he mentioned in an announcement. “When students have access to healthy foods, opportunities to be physically active and supportive environments, they are better prepared to learn and succeed.”
