NC State neighborhood mourns demise of former swimmer, coach :: WRAL.com

Former NC State swimmer and coach John Dunbar “Jack” Roney died at 39, the program announced Sunday evening. 

No particulars have been launched about his demise, which occurred on July 5, according to a post from Roney’s sister. A pal posted on social media that Roney died in a “tragic accident.” 

Roney’s spouse Maresa is a former NC State swimmer and the couple have 5 younger kids. The couple had not too long ago celebrated their fifteenth marriage ceremony anniversary, in keeping with a GoFundMe page set up for the family. 

“Jack was one of those rare people who made everyone around him better,” NC State swimming coach Braden Holloway wrote on social media. “He was an incredible friend, a devoted husband to Maresa, and an amazing dad to their five young children. He lived with kindness, loyalty, trust, and a deep love for his family … and a deep love for Wolfpack Sports!”  

The GoFundMe web page describes Roney as “ a true Wolfpacker, a man of Christ, and a beloved father, friend, and husband.” Roney moved to Charlotte as a toddler and his swimming took off. He gained 5 state championships and set a North Carolina State Championship meet report within the 200-yard backstroke. NC State was the one faculty to recruit him, according to a 2007 story in the school’s newspaper.

Roney, a 2009 graduate, left NC State as this system’s report holder within the 200-yard breaststroke. He was an assistant from 2014 to 2016. Roney’s X profile describes him as a “NC State Wolfpack Swimming Alum and former record holder.” It additionally notes his curiosity in meteorology, aviation and smoked meats. He was a lifelong Tampa Bay Bucaneers fan, in keeping with the profile.

“His impact on our program will be remembered,” NC State’s swimming group wrote.
