Notice of extension of passport journey restriction.

On September 1, 2017, all U.S. passports had been declared invalid for journey to, in, or via the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), until specifically validated for such journey. The restriction has been prolonged yearly since 2017, and, if not renewed, the restriction is about to run out on August 31, 2026. This discover extends the restriction till August 31, 2027, until prolonged or revoked by the Secretary of State.

The extension of the journey restriction is in impact on September 1, 2026.

On September 1, 2017, pursuant to the authority of 22 U.S.C. 211a and Executive Order 11295 (31 FR 10603), and in accordance with 22 CFR 51.63(a)(3), all U.S. passports had been declared invalid for journey to, in, or via the DPRK until specifically validated for such journey. The restriction was renewed on September 1 in every year from 2018 via 2025. If not renewed once more, the restriction is about to run out on August 31, 2026.

The Department of State has decided there continues to be severe threat to U.S. residents and nationals of arrest and long-term detention constituting imminent hazard to their bodily security, as outlined in 22 CFR 51.63(a)(3). Accordingly, all U.S. passports shall stay invalid for journey to, in, or via the DPRK until specifically validated for such journey beneath the authority of the Secretary of State. This extension to the restriction of journey to the DPRK shall be efficient on September 1, 2026, and shall expire August 31, 2027, until prolonged or revoked by the Secretary of State.
