As an expert portrait and wedding ceremony photographer, I’m always attempting to one-up myself, to make the subsequent gallery of pictures even higher than the final. But, there’s one style that I’ll proceed to shoot even when I’m completely horrible at it: wildlife pictures.
I don’t contemplate myself an expert wildlife photographer, which is probably why heading out to a nature protect with my digicam feels liberating. There’s no strain to get an ideal shot, there aren’t any wedding ceremony timelines and there aren’t any unwilling members of the family to take care of.
Heck, it’s extremely possible that the “subject” might by no means even present up for the photograph shoot in any respect, wildlife being, nicely, wild. It’s simply me, my digicam, and (probably) some nature.
Wildlife pictures is my type of self-care. Perhaps a spa day is perhaps a greater type of self-care than hauling the heaviest lenses on a multi-mile hike, and but, I emerge from the woods sweaty, muscle tissues aching, however a smile plastered on my face.
My use of wildlife pictures as self-care dates again to the COVID-19 pandemic, when my common escapes had been all shut down on the identical time that I had digital college positioned on prime of an already precariously balanced to-do listing.
I in a short time realized that if I’m each a greater mom and a greater artist if I take the time to step away and spend a while exterior. My artistic mind wants time to wander aimlessly, bored, and there’s no higher place than a stroll via the woods (or a row on the lake).
Sometimes, I head out on a wildlife shoot and I never see anything more exciting than the typical birds that surround my bird feeder at home. Sometimes, I see unusual wildlife and I’m not fast enough to bring my camera up to my eye, so I shoot empty branches instead.
And yes, sometimes I do get some wildlife shots that I’m proud of.
I turned both of my creative hobbies – writing and photography – into a career. But I think every professional artist needs a creative outlet that doesn’t come with the pressures of a creative career. For me, that outlet is wildlife photography.
Even if the subject never shows up, I’m more grounded, my brain more apt to think outside the box, with some time in the woods with my camera.
