At age 17, I joined these residents’ marketing campaign to shut the incinerators. I realized to go door to door and to prepare home conferences, city halls, and marches. We ultimately received a ban on burning hospital waste at these amenities. I wasn’t but acquainted with the phrases “activism” and “environmental justice,” however I knew that constructing energy collectively to enhance our lives was what I needed to do for the remainder of my life.

Years later, the talents I realized whereas preventing the incinerators led me to union organizing. For 15 years, I labored with college staff, nonprofit staff, resort housekeepers, port truck drivers, and recycling staff to win respect and dignity on the job. It was in 2006, throughout a marketing campaign to implement a living-wage ordinance for resort housekeepers in Emeryville, California, that I began photographing these struggles.

A resort that refused to adjust to the living-wage ordinance fired our total organizing committee and despatched federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) brokers to staff’ properties to intimidate them. Undeterred, we spent three years on a picket line, strolling the identical block of sidewalk exterior the resort — generally for six hours a day, six days every week.

Press photographers documented our protests and press briefings, however I observed that they have been by no means round to seize the extra “mundane” moments, such because the look on staff’ faces once they realized to belief one another, lose their concern, and construct collective energy. So, I picked up a digital camera and began to shoot. (The staff ultimately received a union and again pay!)

After that, I began bringing a digital camera alongside in every single place I went. I had no thought what I used to be doing. Each time I met a “real” photographer, I’d ask them to indicate what the buttons on my digital camera did. I finally took my first and solely images class at Laney College in Oakland. The one factor I’ve realized since is that you simply don’t want fancy instruments to do that work — the true artwork is in seeing.
