Henderson picture exhibit reveals Nevada then and now

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — A brand new artwork exhibit at Henderson City Hall gives a take a look at Southern Nevada via a few of the oldest images taken throughout the area, paired with photographs of what those self same areas seem like at the moment.

The exhibit, titled “Stories of Southern Nevada,” attracts from tons of of historic images — primarily taken between 1867 and 1871 by Civil War photographer Timothy O’Sullivan, who documented a then-rugged Nevada panorama of mines, ranches and the Colorado River.

Photographer spent years monitoring down actual areas

Gary Reese, a photographer and geographer, spent years learning O’Sullivan’s photographs and dealing along with his spouse to find out the exact areas the place the unique images had been taken. The couple then returned to these spots to {photograph} them as they seem now.

“You got to do a lot of discovery in order to find the proverbial tripod holes where O’Sullivan was standing,” Reese stated. “It sends you back in your mind in time to what that area looked like in 1871.”

Exhibit layers historic and trendy imagery

Meg Heeres, visible and public arts supervisor for the City of Henderson, stated the show combines a number of applied sciences to inform the area’s story.

“This gives more like context… what was this place before Henderson? What was this place before Boulder City, before Las Vegas?” Heeres stated.
