Fresh off profitable an All About Photo Award, Cesare Simioni’s highly effective black-and-white picture Soul Beneath the Paint has picked up one other main award. The picture of a younger boy has now been named the Grand Winner of the Black and White class on the Pure Street Photography Awards 2026.
Based in Brazil, Simioni captured the second throughout Lambe-Sujo e Caboclinhos – a conventional road theater deeply rooted within the northeastern state of Sergipe.
The annual manifestation tells a painful however highly effective story about Brazil’s historical past, depicting the escape of enslaved individuals and the formation of quilombos – communities based by escaped enslaved individuals and their descendants.

At the middle of the photograph, a younger boy stares instantly into Simioni’s lens, making a putting point of interest. In the competition itself, the Lambe-Sujos are painted black with sugarcane molasses and charcoal, representing Black quilombolas looking for freedom.
The red-painted Caboclinhos, in the meantime, signify Indigenous individuals traditionally recruited by plantation homeowners to pursue and recapture those that escaped.
Grand Winner: ‘Soul Beneath the Paint’
“A cultural legacy passed down from generation to generation,” Simioni explains. “At the heart of the Lambe Sujo and Caboclinhos Festival in Sergipe, a young boy looks out at the world through the lens of his heritage.
“Surrounded by his elders, he carries on his skin and in his expression the resilience, pain, and beauty of one of Brazil’s most powerful folk traditions.”
