Inside the coast and islands of Maine with photographer Peter Ralston

BAR HARBOR — Photographer Peter Ralston previews his new visible memoir, Going Deep: Inside the Coast and Islands of Maine on the subsequent College of the Atlantic Coffee & Conversation August 25. Ralston will be part of COA Interim President Lynn Boulger to share photos and tales from almost 50 years capturing the liminal areas between land and sea, hope and survival, and outsider and insider.

Peter Ralston grew up in Chadd’s Ford, Pennsylvania, labored for a decade as a contract photojournalist, after which started photographing the coast of Maine in 1978, drawn particularly to the working communities that outline the coast’s enduring character.

His work has been seen in lots of books and magazines, featured repeatedly on community tv, and has been exhibited in galleries, collections, and museums all through the United States and overseas, together with The National Gallery of Art, Museum of Fine Arts/Boston, Portland Museum of Art, Mona Bismark Foundation/Paris, Farnsworth Art Museum, Colby College, National Museum of American History/Smithsonian, Art in Embassies Program, Aomori Prefectural Museum/Japan, deYoung Fine Arts Museum/San Francisco, Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza/Madrid, Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Denver Art Museum, Royal Academy of the Arts/London, Saatchi Gallery/London, and lots of others.

In 2003, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws diploma from Colby College for his images in addition to his position as co-founder of the Island Institute.

He opened Ralston Gallery in Rockport, Maine in 2011, promoting his pictures in addition to the work (prints and originals) of his lifelong pals, Andrew and Jamie Wyeth.
