AN ATHENRY photographer was a runner-up in an astrophotography competitors organised by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies.
Drawing 140 entries from throughout Ireland, ‘Reach for the Stars’ showcased extraordinary photos of the night time sky, revealing the great thing about the cosmos via the lens of each newbie and skilled photographers.
David Mackie from Athenry was the runner-up within the Out of this World class, along with his picture A Bubble in Outer Space.
The picture captures the Bubble Nebula, a glowing shell of fuel positioned roughly 10,000 gentle years from Earth.
Another Galway photographer from Renvyle, Connemara Ekaterina Moskovskova was the winner within the Out of this World class.

Her picture As Above, So Below captured a pair standing on a moonlit seashore beneath the glow of the aurora. Reflected within the moist sand beneath, the celebrities and Northern Lights created what judges described as a putting mirror between earth and sky.
“Each year, Reach for the Stars reveals a new perspective on Ireland’s night skies,” commented Dr Eucharia Meehan, CEO and Registrar of DIAS.
“The photographs submitted this year showcase not only incredible technical skill but also creativity, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for the natural wonder above us,” he added.
The profitable photographers shall be recognised at an awards ceremony at DIAS HQ, in Dublin within the coming weeks.
Their photographs, alongside a collection of shortlisted photos, will go on public show in a particular exhibition at a later date, giving guests the prospect to discover a few of Ireland’s most spectacular night time sky images up shut
