An LLC affiliated with a regional gambling company that’s in bankruptcy proceedings announced closures of two more area gaming sites.
Maverick Washington LLC, associated with Maverick Gaming, on Monday filed two Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notifications announcing the closures of two card rooms in Tukwila: Riverside Casino and the Great American Casino. The layoffs tied to the two sites total 238.
The layoffs are set to take effect Nov. 1. The filings note that “certain affected employees” are represented by Teamsters Local 117.
In July 2025, The News Tribune reported that Kirkland-based Maverick would close Palace Casino in Lakewood (8200 Tacoma Mall Blvd.) among four it planned to shutter amid Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization.
The company has since closed additional locations. Three other Maverick-led Lakewood properties remain in operation.
A declaration in the bankruptcy case filed last year by Jeff Seery, chief restructuring officer, cited “significant competition from tribal casinos in their key Washington market, operational misalignments, and industry headwinds,” as reasons behind the bankruptcy.
Seery at the time noted, “Significant minimum wage increases in the Tukwila market have also caused a substantial increase in labor costs on the company’s Tukwila properties.“
The company reported liabilities and assets systemwide between $100 million and $500 million, according to the filings.
Maverick operates gaming properties in Nevada and Colorado, but the bulk of its sites (around 15) remain in Washington state.
On Aug. 31 of this year, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, Houston Division, granted the debtors a fourth order of extension to file a Chapter 11 plan.
