MLA, Virginia swimmer Sophia Umstead makes Team USA for first time

After claiming her first nationwide championship in the course of the summer time, Sophia Umstead reached one other objective.

The Michigan Lakeshore Aquatics swimmer who trains in Holland was chosen by USA Swimming for her first nationwide group.

Umstead, a former Jenison state champion who swims on the University of Virginia, was one in every of 46 ladies throughout the nation to be named to the 2026-27 nationwide group roster.

Umstead joins a handful of MLA swimmers to be on the nationwide group, together with Courtney Bartholomew, Chris DeJong, Devon Nowicki, and others who have been a part of Team USA for junior occasions and camps like Tabahn Afrik, Emily Bos and Eric Solis.

Results from Sept. 1, 2025, to Aug. 31, 2026, have been used to find out the checklist. The full roster attracts from 29 states and 22 universities. Umstead gained the 200-meter breaststroke on the U.S. National Championships, attending to the wall in 2:25.57.

There are swimmers like Umstead, on her first group, then some like Katie Ledecky, who was named to the nationwide group for the fifteenth time.

“This National Team reflects the incredible depth of talent we have across the country,” USA Swimming National Team Executive Director and Coach Greg Meehan stated in a press launch. “We have veteran athletes continuing to perform at the highest level alongside a talented group making their first National Team. That combination of experience and emerging talent gives us a lot to be excited about as we build toward LA28.”
