Ever longed for a do-over? Of course. It’s life.

In early June. I learn a remembrance letter throughout a packed memorial for photographer Mark Wallheiser, who died in May. I didn’t personally know the author, however I actually knew Wallheiser, 72, and his Pulitzer-winning photojournalism.

Wallheiser and I understood one another for the reason that mid-’80s. He was proficient, open-minded, lanky and sport.

That explains our visiting a “vampire” stripper bar in New Orleans, getting kicked out of the Superdome by Gators coach Steve Spurrier and overlaying a band gig at Bubba’s Pizza within the Florida Panhandle the place the proprietor stored a loaded pistol inside a plastic bag within the beer cooler. (No powder residue left on the hand that means.)

Even in probably the most absurd conditions, I felt snug with Wallheiser.

I used to be the final speaker on the Wallheiser memorial, which was held on the open-air public pavilion on his beloved Shell Point seashore. The audio system ranged from a humorous boyhood buddy to heartbroken colleagues.

It was nightfall by the point I took the mic. I couldn’t see squat as I butchered the letter. It ended with the somber poem “Crossing the Bar” by Alfred Lord Tennyson. My poetry studying was so dismal that Lord Tennyson ought to have crawled from his tomb and kicked me between the legs whereas shouting, “Good lord, man.”

During the automobile journey again to Tallahassee, my spouse, Amy, mentioned, “You should have just told the Savage Kingdom story.”

This is the Savage Kingdom story.

Sigfried & Roy & Gloria

Summer 2001. Hot because the satan’s tailpipe.

Wallheiser befriended Gloria Johnson, a lobbyist who raised Florida panthers named Sugar and Spice at her residence in Havana. She had change into a surrogate caretaker for tiger cubs. Four white tiger cubs had been having a Christmas picture portrait executed in Central Florida as a lure for Las Vegas magicians/animals act Siegfried & Roy.

Would I care to write down a narrative about Johnson whereas Wallheiser snapped pictures?

Uh, yeah.

In late July, Amy and I drove our Honda Wheezer to a large-cat breeding facility known as Savage Kingdom in Center Hill within the boonies of Sumter County, the swampy bellybutton of Florida. A lush nowhere.

We knew we had arrived on the proper place after we noticed indicators over the hurricane fence: “PLEASE DO NOT FEED YOUR FINGERS TO THE TIGERS.” “DANGER: ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK.”

What had Wallheiser orchestrated this time?

Enter the Kingdom

Savage Kingdom featured a maze of wire cages and animal runs. They held an assortment of felines — snow leopards, bobcats, pumas, leopards and, in fact, a number of tigers.

In zoos, the animals are stored behind bars or in distant habitats that aren’t accessible to guests. At Savage Kingdom, we may stroll proper up and stand inches from the predators. We had been allowed to wander round, on our personal, whereas Wallheiser arrange his tools.

When we returned to the primary home, we met Robert Baudy, 79, the Frenchman who owned Savage Kingdom. Baudy (pronounced boo-dee) was sporting brief sleeves. His forearms had been coated in divots and previous claw marks. The flesh regarded like freshly pounded dice steak.

“How did you get those scars?” I requested.

“Jaguars,” he mentioned in a thick French accent, which made it sound like he mentioned ‘zag wars.’ “You can do nothing with jaguars.”

“Good to know,” I mentioned.

Johnson and Amy climbed right into a wire cage the scale of a bulk fridge with tiny, blue-eyed tigers. They tried to rearrange a background of neatly wrapped Christmas presents and picket nutcrackers. The feline fashions stored screaming and squirming. The props went in all places.

While the shoot fidgeted on, I wandered just a few yards away and watched as a volunteer named Vincent Lowe hosed out a tiger run. The cage’s occupant, T.J., a 450-pound younger tiger who was sired by the bigger and grumpier Tijek, was having a blast taking part in within the stream of water. T.J. bounced round like a kitten taking part in with string.

Ten days later, Lowe was killed by Tijek when he was making repairs on the animal’s cage. Lowe, who wore a pistol in a holster on his waist, had time to shut a gate and toss the weapon to a co-worker, who survived. Baudy shot Tijek to demise on the spot.

Savage Kingdom, attractive but lethal.

Out right here within the subject

After the Christmas card portrait was accomplished, Johnson determined to take T.J. out for a stroll.

Johnson put T.J., a cat she had raised when it was a cub, on a leash. She held a tiny using crop that she used to pop the tiger on the aspect if the beast began wandering off beam. They walked into an open subject as Wallheiser and I adopted.

Wallheiser, who wished to get pictures of the Siberian within the open, messed together with his digicam tools. He handed me an aluminum-lined reflector display to carry whereas he adjusted his lens. The daylight hit the reflector, and the glint caught the attention of the tiger.

Uh. Oh.

Some witnesses within the viewers on that notorious day in 2003 on the Mirage in Vegas, when Roy was attacked by a tiger midperformance, mentioned mild bounced off jewellery worn by a girl within the entrance row. That was the set off that set the tiger off. Cats react to shiny issues.

“Put that reflector down now and back off,” Johnson mentioned.

I didn’t must be advised twice. Then I rotated and commenced to slowly stroll again to Baudy’s home.

“Never turn your back on a tiger,” Johnson mentioned.

Oh. Now she provides directions.

I rotated. Johnson and T.J. had been about 35 toes away, a distance the tiger may cowl in seconds. She tried to distract the tiger’s consideration. The cat nonetheless wished the bling. Wallheiser shot me one in all his Wallheiser appears as if to say, “Hey, getting mauled by a tiger in Florida is one helluva good story.”

At least the pictures would have been nice.

Man, I miss Wallheiser. He instigated one of the best adventures. Once you survived.
