“The team’s really come together. For a very individual sport, they’ve really bonded as teammates,” coach Eric Gill stated. “We have some younger guys in the lineup this season, so I think that’s been the biggest part of it, them bonding as a team. They’re all good golfers, but if you’re coming out and not enjoying the day, it makes it hard to shoot good scores.”

Hingham has gained comfortably in every of its matches, typically by 20-plus strokes, and Gill credit their camaraderie for his or her scorching begin.

“They’re out there playing smart, they’re really battling each other more so than the other teams,” Gill stated. “They’re battling for the top six or eight spots, there’s a battle for the number one, and I think that’s helping us find some low rounds.”

“Competitive golf can get stressful, so easing it up with things like that makes it a lot more fun,” freshman Michael Rogers stated. “For a lot of people it takes the pressure off, so it makes it a lot easier to play.”

Sophomore Emery Olin, who’s made it a 1-2 punch on the high of the lineup with Rogers, agreed. “I think I could go out with anybody on this team and play a good round. I know all of the guys really well, and the chemistry is really good.”

The Harbormen acquired an invite to subsequent week’s Cape Cod National tournament, the place they’ll sq. off towards eight of the opposite high groups in Massachusetts.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Gill stated. “I know that we’ll have to make some hard decisions [for the lineup], but the whole team’s going down to support. It’ll be great having all the guys on the course, listening to all the ‘bangarangs’ that go down. Hopefully you get some good golf in, put in a good showing, and if we’re lucky enough to win then that’s even better.”

The Cape High School Invitational has, lately, served as a bellwether for groups with championship aspirations. For a program that has come shut however by no means lifted the state championship trophy, what’s their ceiling?

“I wouldn’t ask the ceiling, I’d just ask how high,” stated senior Andrew Garside. “The guys really come together every match, every practice, we play together almost every day. I think we’d be disappointed if we don’t win a state championship.”

“It makes every one of my afternoons pleasant,” Gill added. “It’s a lot of hours, it’s a lot of work, but everybody’s out here and they’re supporting each other. As certain things come around, like the Cape Cod National and the state tournaments, it’s going to be really hard to make some calls. This group of seniors really supports each other, and so if one of them wants to make the cut and doesn’t, they’re going to be there to support.

“So far, I’m having the most fun season I’ve ever coached.”

▪ Cape Cod National Golf Club in Brewster introduced the sector for its tenth annual High School Invitational this week.
