Over 80 Greater Lafayette veterans journey to Washington, D.C. for up to date Honor Flight

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – More than 80 veterans from Greater Lafayette are again house resting after touring to Washington, D.C., this week for the newest Honor Flight.

On Tuesday morning, 81 veterans and their guardians kicked off the day with breakfast and donuts earlier than boarding an American Airlines flight out of Purdue University Airport certain for the nation’s capital.

The Honor Flight of Greater Lafayette traces its roots to 2012, when native Gold Star Mothers helped launch the initiative. While that founding group carried out 22 flights, the present group has now accomplished six extra journeys, with Tuesday marking its newest milestone.

For a number of attendees, securing a seat on the aircraft required persistence.

“We applied two years ago, but we had medical issues that bumped us from the list,” stated Army veteran Maryellen Deck. “They called us in the spring and said we are on this trip, and we’ve been looking forward to it for quite a while.”

The roster of vacationers spanned a number of service eras, together with the Korean War and Vietnam War. Among them was Maurice Parr, who was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1955 and delivered medical gear to army hospitals throughout Europe.

“We were concerned only on two occasions: the Suez Crisis with Egypt and Great Britain, and right after that, the Korean uprising took place,” Parr stated. “In both cases we thought we were going to combat, and it didn’t happen in either case.”

During their time within the capital, the veterans toured the Marine Corps War Memorial, the Air Force Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery, in addition to the National World War II Memorial. Two emotional stops resonated deeply with the group: the Korean War Veterans Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Army veterans Maryellen and Thomas Lee Deck made the journey collectively as husband and spouse, having each served through the Korean War period.

“We were not together in the Army, but there were seven of us in our first-grade class, and I decided to marry her many years later,” Thomas Lee Deck stated.

For those that lived via these conflicts, the monuments stand as deeply private tributes. Robert Richey, who served as a medic at Walson Army Hospital from 1966 to 1968, shared that he practically opted out of the journey as a result of he had not been stationed abroad. However, a most cancers prognosis two months in the past shifted his outlook and spurred him to attend.

Seeing the depictions of what front-line troops confronted stirred up highly effective reflections amongst those that served in assist roles.

“It’s hurtful to me to see how they lived compared to how I lived during their three or five years in service,” Parr stated. “It’s just difficult.”
