Shark kills swimmer off Western Australian metropolis seashore :: WRAL.com

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A person was killed by a shark as he swam off a Western Australian metropolis seashore Friday whereas beachgoers watched in horror.

Boats and helicopters searched the ocean off Sorrento Beach in Perth’s northern suburbs after the late-morning assault, a police assertion stated. Police wouldn’t say whether or not potential stays had been discovered.

But police have been assured the “swimmer died as a result of the attack,” the assertion stated.

A witness to the assault, Darrel Haythornthwaite, advised Nine Network tv that the sufferer had been swimming with a now traumatized pal.

“I was just shocked. I mean, I feel for his mate. He’s apologized and said ‘I didn’t save my mate,’” Haythornthwaite advised Nine. “I said, ‘You couldn’t have done anything.’”

Witnesses reported seeing blood within the water.

“My friend said, ‘Jac, I think there’s been a shark attack,’ and I looked out to the ocean and I could see a pool of blood,” seashore walker Jacqui Rapaic advised Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Ryan Rowe, a resident, advised The West Australian newspaper that he reached the seashore quickly afterward and was advised by an onlooker “someone had been bitten by a shark.”

“I couldn’t believe there was that much blood (that had) come out of a human body,” Rowe stated.

Authorities closed the seashore to swimmers. Witnesses described the swimmer as a person in his 60s however police didn’t determine him additional.

In a separate shark assault, a surfer sustained a severe leg damage Monday close to Geraldton, about 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of Perth.

Three spearfishing divers have been killed by sharks off the Australian coast in 4 weeks over May and June. In January, a 12-year-old boy died in a hospital days after he was mauled by a bull shark in Sydney Harbor.
