Silver Sneaks Previous Cherry 53-47 in Opening Exhibition Meet – New Mexico Lobos

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In a first chance to officially hit the pool in a racing situation, the Lobo swimming and diving team hosted its annual Cherry-Silver Intrasquad meet, splitting up the team with Silver edging Cherry 53-47.

Elsa Reel, a newcomer from Chrisoval, Texas, took home a pair of titles, winning both the 50 and the 150-yard breaststroke. Sophia Corder swept a pair of fly events for Silver as well, winning the 50 and the 150. The Silver squad went 1-2-3 in the 50-fly with Corder, Arianna Stokes, and Maya Van Atta to take important points.

Reel and Corder were both part of the winning 200-yard medley relay as well, along with Stokes and Maya Cansler.

There were no true distance races, but Olivia Hann won the 300-yard free by less than a second over Summer Wenger in a tight race for first. Liv O’Mahony, another newcomer, won a pair of races for Cherry, winning the 150-free and the 100-IM. Veteran Alex McGill also picked up points for Cherry with a win in the 150-yard backstroke.

Diving was split, with Silver winning the 1-meter and Cherry the 3-meter. Cherry nearly pulled off a comeback with a big win in the final race, the 200-freestyle relay, as Hann, O’Mahony, McGill and Ava Schlosser finished in 1:36.99.

Although none of the times were official, Schlosser turned in a PR in the 50 back, and Reel’s 100 IM was a PR as well, significant milestones for an opening exhibition meet.

Silver’s win marked the fourth straight win in the intrasquad series, giving Alice English and Sophia Corder a perfect 4-0 intrasquad record.
