Clovis residents urged to keep away from journey as flooding intensifies

CLOVIS, N.M. (KVII) — Unrelenting rainfall throughout jap New Mexico on Thursday left Clovis with harmful flash flooding that closed a number of roads and left residents and drivers stranded.

Mayor Mike Morris urged residents to remain residence and off the roads.

In an update on Thursday night concerning the flood circumstances, Morris mentioned, “police and fire departments are actively assisting stranded motorists and residents affected by flooding. Public Works crews have barricaded numerous streets where water has made travel unsafe.”

The City of Clovis listed among the streets that had been closed on Thursday night in a release warning residents of flood hazard from heavy rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service, “each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm related hazard. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water.”

Officials stress “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
