Possible space debris sighted over southern US sky

Observers throughout the southeastern U.S. and in the Midwest reported witnessing fireballs racing across the sky on Saturday night.

Videos captured the event, with many speculating on its nature: Asteroids? Meteors from the Ursid meteor shower? Drones?

While the Ursid meteor shower did peak on Saturday night during the winter solstice, the most plausible explanation is that it was space debris fragmenting within Earth’s atmosphere.

A surfing contest that depends on exceptional surf conditions took place on the north shore of Oahu on Sunday.
