AAA forecasts that more than 119 million individuals will travel at least 50 miles from their homes during the year-end holiday season, which spans from Saturday, December 21 to January 1. AAA Missouri representative Nick Chabarria indicated that projections for domestic travel suggest an increase in the number of travelers this year compared to the prior record established in 2019.
“I risk sounding repetitive, but we have been discussing holiday travel and breaking records for the last few years, and we anticipate yet another record in terms of traveler numbers during these dates,” he remarked.
Chabarria noted that individuals simply wish to venture out and travel.
“Whether it stems from the shutdown that limited their travel or if they are simply feeling more secure in their ability to travel, or even due to the economy—regardless of the reasons—it’s a pattern we have observed for a couple of years,” stated Chabarria.
However, since Christmas and New Year’s fall on a Wednesday this year, the holiday travel period could be more manageable, with both driving and flying being distributed over two weekends.
“Especially travel on the actual holidays, Christmas and New Year’s,” he expressed. “Some of the optimal days for travel regarding volume, as it tends to be relatively light and easy to navigate, but, indeed, it’s going to be staggered. Individuals won’t all depart on one single day, which should help reduce some of the congestion.”
