The event, backed by UKSI and UK Sport, was designed as a chance to unite the Olympic Pathway Swimming and Para-Swimming training squads along with staff in a collaborative, enjoyable, and non-swimming atmosphere.

Since September 2024, Manchester Performance Centre has evolved into an integrated facility, with both groups utilizing the same pool time, amenities, and personnel – while the festive bake-off in partnership with a local culinary school fostered social unity and offered an opportunity to dismantle preconceived notions and improve understanding of one another’s requirements.

Divided into pairs and assigned the task of crafting a yule log, limited guidance was provided (in keeping with British Bake Off customs), thereby prompting the pairs to collaborate and innovate together. The cookery school subsequently evaluated each pair’s final creation.

Reflecting on the significance of the event, Ryan Livingstone, Head Coach at Manchester Performance Centre remarked:

“It was a truly delightful afternoon for all present, a fantastic opportunity to strengthen team unity and a lovely social engagement for the group as we approach the holiday season.

“The event will foster greater unity and integration between the two programs, ultimately guiding us toward a cohesive group of athletes at Manchester Performance Centre.”

Aled Davies, Performance Coach for Para-Swimming, commented:

“It was fantastic to witness their inventiveness in an alternate setting, wonderful to see them collaborating, exchanging diverse ideas and strategies to tackle the same challenge. It necessitated substantial teamwork.

“With the support from UK Sport, UKSI, and AquaticsGB, we’ve been able to cultivate an event that accelerates the building of relationships in an authentic way. Consequently, we’ve provided the swimmers with a stage to foster connections with each other, alleviating some of the hindrances that may lead to social anxieties.”

Following the evaluation by the cookery school of each pair’s efforts, Matt Richards and Cameron Vearncombe were announced as the winners, earning the culinary bragging rights.

“It was amazing to spend time with the entire centre outside of the pool, and even more gratifying to leave with a victory alongside Cam!” Richards exclaimed.
