Astronauts marooned on the International Space Station during Christmas have transmitted a holiday message back to Earth.

Sunita Williams, Barry Wilmore, Don Pettit, and Nick Hague were sent into space on June 5 for what was supposed to be an eight-day test flight mission.

However, the Boeing-manufactured Starliner spacecraft encountered various technical difficulties, including helium leaks and thruster malfunctions, and has been unable to return since then.

In the video message, recorded on December 23, Mr. Hague states: “The holiday season is about gathering with friends and family and cherished ones – this year we find ourselves in orbit away from them, hence we wish to convey our sincere merry Christmas and we hope you enjoy a splendid holiday.”

In the footage, the astronauts hand each other weightless candy canes, with Mr. Hague adding: “We’re not the only ones spending time apart from our families.”

“There’s a vast team on the ground that will support us with mission controls across the globe during the holidays, and I want to express my gratitude for the sacrifices they are collectively making.”

Lastly, Mr. Pettit mentions that the holidays are “associated with food and indulgence” as they showcase an airtight package of canned goods.

This isn’t the first Christmas that Ms. Williams has celebrated defying gravity – she was in space for the holiday season in 2006.

Last month, the crew received a day off to commemorate Thanksgiving – and they also took the opportunity to cast their votes in the US elections on November 5.
