“The Katla Ice cave, set amid the breathtaking landscape of Vik on Iceland’s southern coast, is a unique place. Named after the volcano situated beneath the Kötlujökull glacier, this ice cave is spectacular. To access it, one must undertake a guided hike and descent with a trained glacier expert. After capturing their images in the cave, we ascended the glacier where Mauli and Christian exchanged their vows against the backdrop of the sunset; it was a moment filled with joy and beauty.”

Backwards-swimming Bathyopsurus This is a uncommon deep-sea isopod that lives within the two deepest layers of the Ocean, between 4,000 and 11,000 meters. Cherisse Persad, a grasp’s pupil on the University of Plymouth, notes that their motion is an interesting adaptation. Bathyopsurus nybelini makes use of two pairs of enlarged, paddle-like legs to swim; scientists have noticed the animal shifting backward and even the other way up. This permits them to maneuver each alongside the seafloor and vertically into the water column. Some suspect that shifting meals away from the ocean backside helps the isopods keep away from seafloor predators (and snack stealers). The motion was one in every of Persad’s favourite issues about Bathyopsurus. She says the crew nicknamed this swimmer the “angel isopod” as a result of their paddles seemed like wings. She added, “With the cinematic effect of the shifting ROV lights, there were moments when it seemed to be drifting through a galaxy!” The #DeepWonders science crew, led by Dr. Dr Diva Amon of SpeSeas, noticed this benthic ballet dancer at 3,923 meters, or 2.4 miles deep. During the month-long expedition within the waters surrounding Trinidad and Tobago, they documented uncommon ecosystems, intriguing and exquisite wildlife, and constructed scientific capability within the area — half of the crew included college students and early-career researchers from the Caribbean. By exploring and accumulating important information, the expedition will inform future ocean stewardship within the area and past. Credit: ROV SuBastian / Schmidt Ocean Institute
