I often mention that rather than just photographing a place, I document the environment. This is the reason I typically don’t just go to a location — I visit when something noteworthy is occurring.

Such was the case during my recent visit to Lake Tahoe. I had been there a few years prior and struggled with capturing images (YT link). I recognized the area had promise; I merely required the right conditions that suit me best.

Several days prior to my journey, I observed the weather forecast: expecting up to a foot of snow in the Tahoe region. I have a few favorite locations on the weather app, so I constantly monitor the surroundings.

Of course, long-term predictions can often serve as little more than informed speculation, especially when attempting to forecast the weather in the mountains. Thus, I postponed booking a room until the very last moment, once it became evident that snow was on its way.

Fortunately, prices not only remained stable… they actually decreased. Mid-December is considered low season in Tahoe. It’s too cold for swimming and hiking, yet too early for skiing and holiday festivities. I’ve found that when conditions deter crowds, they generally create excellent opportunities for photography… and for discovering relatively inexpensive accommodations.

I am genuinely pleased I gave Tahoe another opportunity. After all, there are no unfavorable locations for photography, only unsuitable conditions.

I wish you all delightful moments, and I extend my wishes for Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

Adrian
