HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – For the Spradlin family, Friday evenings entail two key components.

Pizza and a film.

This tradition allows Preston Spradlin to forge memories and connect with his loved ones.

However, those who spend time with James Madison’s inaugural year men’s basketball coach will soon discover that during conversations, at least one quote from a film will be voiced.

“I’m a huge movie enthusiast. I adore films,” declares Spradlin, who identifies ‘300’ as his favorite film.

Shortly after Spradlin took on the role of head coach at Morehead State, he sought methods to enhance film sessions, making them both effective and enjoyable for his athletes. That’s when the concept of integrating movie scenes into film analysis to emphasize specific points originated.

“We began inserting [movie clips] to capture the guys’ interest, maintain their focus, and infuse some enjoyment into the film sessions.”

As JMU athletes discover more about their first-year head coach, they appreciate these film sessions. Spradlin has showcased clips from ‘Talladega Nights,’ ‘Dodgeball,’ and ‘Friday.’

“He often says, ‘Ball me blazer,’” relates forward Justin Taylor.

Eddie Ricks III recalls a moment when he used a scene from ‘Men in Black’ during a film session.

“[Spradlin’s] a significant admirer of Will Smith,” mentions Ricks. “If you’ve seen ‘Men in Black,’ [Agent J] has this device that erases memories. Whenever [Spradlin] dislikes something, during analysis of it, he’ll lift the pen and erase your memory.”

While the film room establishes a strategy against the forthcoming opponent, it also serves as a reminder to Spradlin of his passion for the sport.

“I enjoy having fun,” Spradlin expresses. “For me, the game is enjoyable. We need to ensure we’re continuously educating these athletes while also letting them have fun as we improve.”

James Madison’s upcoming match is scheduled for Sunday against Midway.
