Unveiling the Champions of the Caledonian Sleeper Photography Contest!

The Caledonian Sleeper has revealed the champions of its photography contest, which sought to honor the UK’s most picturesque sites along the train’s journey, including a third-place finisher from Amersham.

The competition encouraged participants throughout the UK to showcase pictures of their favorite vistas during their travels or particular spots and activities facilitated by the Caledonian Sleeper.

Duncan McEvoy from York secured first place with his breathtaking shot of the Caledonian Sleeper traversing the South Esk Viaduct in Montrose, beneath a pink sky illuminated by the Harvest Full Moon.

Mr. McEvoy snapped the image around 6:43 am on the morning of Wednesday, September 25, 2024, as the train crossed the viaduct at the entrance of Montrose Basin.

He earned a round trip in a luxurious en-suite Club Room onboard the Caledonian Sleeper along with dinner, plus a £500 Amazon gift card for photography gear.

His photograph will also feature in the Euston Guest Lounge, and he will participate in a one-on-one virtual session with acclaimed photographer and guest judge Tony Marsh.

The second prize was awarded to Gordon Sellar from Bishopbriggs, with a driver’s perspective image of Rannoch Moor.

(Image: Gordon Sellar)Mr. Sellar, a conductor with West Coast Railways, was on a line inspection locomotive operating ahead of the Fort William segment of the Caledonian Sleeper when he had the opportunity to halt and capture the shot of Rannoch Moor.

He received a £250 Amazon voucher for his photograph.

Tied for third place were Tim Moran from Northwich, Cheshire, and Steve Slack from Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

Mr. Moran documented the initial rays of sunlight appearing over the River Weaver, while Mr. Slack captured a sunrise above the Forth Bridge.

Both were awarded a £100 Amazon voucher for their submissions.

Kathryn Darbandi, managing director of Caledonian Sleeper, stated: “Choosing a winner from the multitude of remarkable entries we received was extremely challenging.

“In fact, we ended up with four winners rather than just three due to the exceptional quality of the submissions.

“I would like to convey my gratitude to everyone who shared a photograph for the competition and to our panel of judges who faced the tough task of determining our champions.

“There’s such a vast array of talented photographers across the nation, so making it into one of our top spots is a significant accomplishment.

“The images captured reflect just a fraction of the splendid scenery our country boasts, all of which can be savored while journeying on the Caledonian Sleeper.”
