“UK Condemns Houthi Missile Strikes on Israel: A Call for Accountability at the UN Security Council”

Mr. President, the UK is profoundly concerned about the Houthis’ persistent missile and UAV assaults on Israel and their continued attacks on international maritime activities in the Red Sea.

We firmly denounce these actions, which are reckless, and urge the Houthis to halt immediately. There is no excuse for these strikes.
Houthi hostility not only endangers regional stability but also exacerbates the already critical humanitarian and economic situation within Yemen.

A thorough and inclusive political resolution remains the most effective path toward a tranquil, stable, and thriving Yemen.

We also recognize the role that Iran plays in escalating this situation. Its prolonged financial and military backing of the Houthis has facilitated and intensified Houthi aggression. Iran is accountable for the conduct of its proxies, and it must put an end to its unlawful activities that destabilize the region and jeopardize global peace and stability.
Mr. President, the UK reaffirms its backing of Israel’s entitlement to self-defense against Houthi assaults. Nonetheless, Israeli actions must align with their responsibilities under international humanitarian law, encompassing the safeguarding of civilians.

We express our concerns regarding Israeli attacks on Yemen’s civilian infrastructure, particularly the recent strike on Sana’a airport, which injured a UNHAS crew member and put the Director-General of the World Health Organisation and his team at risk. Let me emphasize, humanitarian workers must be able to perform their critical tasks in a safe and secure environment.
Director-General Tedros was in Yemen to address the ongoing unlawful detention of humanitarian, NGO, and diplomatic personnel by the Houthis. We appreciate his and his team’s efforts and urge the Houthis to uphold their commitments and promptly and unconditionally release all detainees.

In conclusion, I reiterate the UK’s plea for de-escalation and stress our dedication to ending the conflict in the region. Further bloodshed and suffering serve no one’s interests.

We need to break the cycle of violence and bring about the long-awaited peace and security for the inhabitants of the area.
