NASA has introduced the successor of its exceptionally successful Ingenuity helicopter, which traversed the Martian terrain for more than three years after landing alongside the Perseverance Rover in 2020. A digital illustration, created through collaboration between the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California and the Ames Research Center, depicts a drone-like craft roughly the size of an SUV, equipped with six rotors. Each rotor features six blades, which are smaller than those of Ingenuity but, theoretically, could offer greater lift.

The “Mars Chopper,” as named by NASA, seems heftier compared to its predecessor and has an enhanced payload capacity for carrying scientific equipment, including imaging and analysis tools. This modern drone can transport five kilograms over a maximum distance of three kilometers. This design will significantly advance exploration not only of Mars but also of any extraterrestrial bodies that possess a solid surface and an atmosphere capable of supporting flight.

“Researchers could utilize the Chopper to closely examine extensive areas of terrain rapidly – including regions where rovers cannot navigate safely,” NASA declared.

Despite its sturdy and substantially improved design, the Mars Chopper will face formidable challenges. Ingenuity, weighing 1.8 kilograms and featuring two counter-rotating blades, was intended to execute five experimental flights within 30 days. It remarkably operated for nearly three years, completing 72 flights and traveling 30 times farther than intended.

What caused Ingenuity’s crash?

Last month, NASA also disclosed the reasons behind Ingenuity’s crash on the Martian surface after an extended duration. According to engineers from JPL and AeroVironment, the malfunction of Ingenuity’s navigation system to deliver precise data “during the flight likely triggered a series of events that concluded the mission.”

Ingenuity’s navigation technology was meant to monitor visual features on the Martian surface using a camera over well-marked (pebbly) yet flat land. During the ill-fated flight, Ingenuity encountered a segment of Jezero Crater characterized by steep, relatively uniform sand ridges. This terrain perplexed the helicopter and led to a severe impact that caused Ingenuity to tilt and roll.

Even while grounded, Ingenuity continues to transmit weather and avionics test information to Perseverance approximately once a week. NASA anticipates that this weather data may assist future explorers of the Red Planet.
