“Unlocking London: New Travel Fees and Forms for Americans in 2025!”

Starting January 8th, 2025, Americans traveling to London or any location within the United Kingdom will be required to apply for an ETA—which stands for electronic travel authorization—before they enter the country.

This does not qualify as a visa, a point emphasized by the U.K. Visas and Immigration Office, as it does not substitute any current visa obligations for travelers from nations that necessitate them.

However, it essentially functions similarly to a visa for American travelers, as they were previously not obligated to possess any documentation or pay any fee to enter the U.K.

Americans will now be required to pay $10 for the ETA application, and every traveler, irrespective of age, must secure one prior to gaining entry into the country (adults can apply on behalf of minors and seniors). No refunds are issued.

The ETA allows each traveler to remain in the U.K. for up to six months for purposes such as “tourism, visiting relatives and friends, business, or short-term studies.”

To submit an application, you will need your passport, a method of payment, and an email account. Applicants must upload images of their passport and a personal photo as part of the process.

You will receive a response regarding your application within three days or sooner. If accepted, the ETA remains valid for two years, enabling you to travel to the U.K. multiple times during that period (but no stay can exceed six months).

If you need to travel at short notice, you can fly to the U.K. while your ETA application is still pending, provided you have applied before leaving the United States.
