Explore my relaxed and enjoyable take on photography, where I provide equipment insights, daily photo motivation, and useful tips—perfect for novices and passionate hobbyists.
Photography has always captivated my interest, despite me not being an expert. There’s something enchanting about capturing a moment in time—be it a stunning sunset, a bustling street corner, or simply the ideal depiction of daily life. While smartphones perform wonderfully nowadays (thanks to AI enhancements and advanced functionalities!), I’ve noticed that I lack inspiration from them. They make photography feel overly simple, diminishing that creative spark I yearn for.
When I initially started engaging deeply with photography, I followed the path most individuals take: I watched a multitude of YouTube videos discussing focusing, aperture, shutter speed, composition, street photography—the entire spectrum. However, it soon became quite overwhelming. For me, photography is akin to cooking or designing: the only way to enhance your skills is to practice, practice, and practice again.
Ah, camera equipment—the never-ending obsession. Here’s a recount of my own “camera-desire” adventure:
If I could revisit the past, I would have retained the MFT system and the RX1M2.
This well-known saying holds so much truth. Regardless of how sophisticated or proficient a camera may be, it becomes worthless if it’s gathering dust on a shelf. I appreciate large, full-frame models, but their weight often keeps them at home. Consequently, I continuously seek compact solutions that motivate me to venture out and capture images.
Photography can sometimes resemble a gear-accumulating pastime (guilty!). The key is to concentrate on snapping photos rather than obsessing over the ideal camera. That’s why I appreciate something like the Lumix ZX100—it offers sufficient variety to capture different scenes without distracting me from the moment or leading me to reconsider my lens selection. Yet, there’s also beauty in constraining oneself to a fixed focal length like 40mm on the Ricoh. It compels you to approach the world with greater intention.
This year, I’m challenging myself to post a photo each day on my Instagram and on Unsplash. If you’re on a similar path—or simply enjoy browsing new images—feel free to follow along! I’ll continue experimenting, learning, and capturing, one day at a time.
Ultimately, there’s no incorrect way to engage in photography. If using your phone brings you the most happiness, go for it. If you’re eager to acquire that professional-grade mirrorless camera, more power to you. What truly matters is discovering joy in documenting life’s moments—large, small, and everything in between.
So, here’s to venturing out, framing our shots, and sharing our distinct viewpoints with the world. Who’s joining me?
Below are some images captured with the Ricoh GRIIX HDF:
