AMD (AMD) is unveiling its newest AI PC and graphics processors at CES 2025 in Las Vegas. The organization announced on Monday its latest Ryzen AI Max, additional Ryzen AI 300, and Ryzen AI 200 central processing units (CPUs) designed for AI PCs, alongside potent chips aimed at gaming desktops, laptops, and handheld gaming devices.

These chips position AMD to intensify competition with adversaries Intel (INTC) and Qualcomm (QCOM) within the emerging AI PC arena, as well as against Intel in the desktop and mobile gaming sectors, which are critical markets for the semiconductor corporation.

The Ryzen AI Max processors are tailored for high-performance laptops aimed at gamers and content developers. According to the company, they will incorporate up to 128GB of unified memory and a neural processing unit capable of achieving up to 50 TOPS (trillions of operations per second).

TOPS serve as a standard metric for assessing a chip’s AI capabilities. AMD, Intel, Nvidia (NVDA), and Qualcomm are all advocating TOPS as the criterion consumers should prioritize when selecting AI PCs.

AMD indicates that the Ryzen AI Max will also be available in a PRO line that will feature AMD PRO functionalities including enhanced security and enterprise management capabilities.

In addition to the AI Max, AMD demonstrated its latest AI 300 and AI 300 Pro Series chips, which comprise the Ryzen AI 7 350 and Ryzen AI 5 340. AMD asserts that the chips are designed to operate AI PCs for both consumer and enterprise customers who may not require the advanced power of its AI Max processors.

Similar to AMD’s Max chips, the AI 300 and AI 300 Pros also provide 50 TOPS of AI capability, enabling them to support applications such as Microsoft’s (MSFT) Copilot+ PC programs, including its Recall and Click to Do functionalities, facilitating snapshot capturing of user activity, quick resumption of previous tasks, and dynamic actions linked to on-screen text and visuals.

AMD also introduced its Ryzen 200 and Ryzen 200 PRO Series chips aimed at cost-effective consumer and enterprise laptops. In contrast to the Ryzen AI Max and Ryzen AI 300 processors, however, the Ryzen 200 provides only 16 TOPS, which indicates that they may not support more advanced AI applications.

Beyond its AI PC CPUs, AMD introduced a range of new gaming-oriented CPUs for desktops, laptops, and handheld PCs. For dedicated PC gamers and content creators, there’s the Ryzen 9950X3D and Ryzen 9900X3D. Gamers in search of high-performance laptops can choose the new Ryzen 9000HX Series chips, which AMD claims provide better thermal management, potentially enhancing battery longevity.

Lastly, the company unveiled its Ryzen Z2 Series gaming processors designed for handheld gaming systems. Handheld PC devices are generally comparable in size to Nintendo’s widely-used Switch console but operate on Windows or Linux-based platforms capable of running PC games.

AMD’s announcements arrive as it endeavors to capture a larger market share from competitor Intel and as Qualcomm continues its advance in the PC segment. Intel is in a challenging position as it strives to accomplish a demanding turnaround strategy. The company’s board has already dismissed former CEO Pat Gelsinger following a significant drop in Intel shares in 2024 and is in search of a new leader.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm remains a relatively minor participant in the PC arena, but its processors are demonstrating potential regarding efficiency and performance. Nonetheless, AMD appears well-positioned for what could be a significant chip market confrontation in 2025.
