Navigating Kentucky’s Roads: Stay Safe Amid Hazardous Conditions

Ky. (WSAZ) – State salt trucks and plowing teams are active on roadways across all northeastern Kentucky areas responding to moderate to heavy snowfall. A transition to freezing rain is anticipated overnight. Residents of Kentucky are urged to refrain from unnecessary travel.

As of 5:30 p.m., crews in Bath, Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Greenup, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas, and Rowan counties report snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches, with the most substantial snowfall occurring along the I-64 corridor. Highways are predominantly blanketed in snow. Air temperatures range from 24 to 27 degrees, while road temperatures hover around 31 degrees.

Crews remain dedicated to clearing travel lanes on primary roads such as I-64 and other priority routes to ensure they remain accessible for emergency personnel. The National Weather Service anticipates a mix of winter weather and perilous driving conditions to persist through Monday. Arctic temperatures in the coming days will further influence the effectiveness of road treatments, particularly after sunset.

While certain travel lanes on major highways may become more visible as the snowfall diminishes and plows make headway, motorists should not assume bare roads and are advised to either avoid travel or make appropriate plans.

The risk of ice will heighten hazardous road conditions and increase the chances of fallen trees and power lines. Always remember to avoid touching or moving downed utility lines and treat non-functional traffic signals as four-way stops.
