This evening, conditions are expected to be calmer, as the area of low pressure that brought us the snow and rain earlier today has moved eastward, leaving a trail of very frigid air and some wintry showers.

A widespread frost will settle in with temperatures widely plummeting below freezing, presenting a risk of ice nearly everywhere, not just limited to the warning zones but extending further east where snowmelt has occurred and the ground remains damp from recent precipitation.

The Met Office has issued several alerts for snow and ice.

There’s an alert for Wales, north-west England, and parts of south-west and central southern England, effective until 10am tomorrow morning. Additional wintry showers will drift in on a north-westerly breeze throughout the evening and into the night. These showers may be persistent and fall as sleet or snow, especially over higher ground where accumulations could occur.

A further snow and ice warning has been declared for Northern Ireland, with the potential for 5cm of snow over the Sperrins. This alert remains in effect until 11:00 tomorrow.

Another alert for snow and ice is in place for northern and western Scotland until 11:00, where wintry showers will also occur, with accumulations of 5-10cm above 200m.

Tomorrow will see sporadic wintry showers in similar regions, but many areas will remain dry with some sunshine, though temperatures will stay very low, not exceeding mid-single digits.

Additionally, there is a distinct warning for potential snow across the southern counties of England on Wednesday, effective from 09:00 until midnight, which could lead to disruptions and result in as much as 2-5cm of snow quite broadly. However, the forecast for this situation is still uncertain.
