“Capturing Nature: A Unique Journey Through Photography and Botany at Yale’s Art Gallery”

Early Innovators

The British botanist Anna Atkins, in the 19th century, integrated photography into scientific investigation by placing specimens of algae and ferns directly onto light-sensitive paper. Concurrently, the pioneering inventor William Henry Fox Talbot experimented with contact prints of botanical samples.

Artists during the early 1900s featured botanicals in their works across a diverse array of stylistic approaches. Karl Blossfeldt produced sculptural studies of leaves and seedlings, whereas Pictorialists like Edward Steichen and Edwin Hale Lincoln created lyrical flower studies to elevate photography to the stature of established art forms.

Contemporary Interpretations

Vibrantly colored pieces by Audrey Flack and Jerome Liebling celebrate the rich palette of different flora. Tanya Marcuse and Mitch Epstein employ plant imagery to reflect on life’s journey from full bloom to inevitable decline. In today’s landscape, the natural world continues to serve as a bountiful source of inspiration for a new generation of creators, including Martine Gutierrez and Atong Atem, who incorporate botanicals into expressions of their personal identity.

Photography and the Botanical World is exhibited on the fourth floor of the museum from November 26, 2024, until June 8, 2025.
