BUDAPEST, Hungary — Three-time Olympic champion Katinka Hosszu from Hungary, recognized as one of the most exceptional all-round swimmers, has declared her retirement.

Affectionately dubbed the “Iron Lady” of the swimming world for her demanding array of events, the 35-year-old Hosszu has participated in five Olympic Games. She made her Olympic debut at the tender age of 15 during the 2004 Athens Games.

Hosszu earned her three individual gold medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, triumphing in the 100-meter backstroke, along with her signature 200 and 400 individual medleys. Additionally, she secured a silver in the 200 backstroke.

She has also claimed nine individual world titles in the long course pool since 2009 and maintains the world record for the long course 200 individual medley. Furthermore, she achieved 17 gold medals in the world short course championships.

“For three decades, the water has been my refuge, a comforting space where I found peace and strength,” she expressed in an Instagram post.

“From the very first moment I entered the pool as a young girl, I realized I had unearthed something extraordinary. The refreshing embrace of the water felt like returning home, a realm where gravity vanished, and every stroke propelled me closer to my aspirations.

“Now, as I reflect on my journey, I experience a profound sense of fulfillment. Medals and records are valuable, yet what resonates most deeply is my everlasting passion for swimming.”
