Huskies Ignite Late-Game Rally to Overcome Vermont

STORRS, Conn. – The No. 15 ranked UConn women’s hockey squad triumphed over the Vermont Catamounts, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Toscano Family Ice Forum. The Huskies rallied from behind, netting two unanswered goals in the third period spearheaded by freshman forward Claire Murdoch. 

Megan Warrener made her ninth start of the season between the pipes for the Huskies, delivering 21 saves in the victory. 

Murdoch initiated the scoring for the Huskies midway through the first period, marking her second consecutive game with a goal. 

Vermont evened the score at one just moments later courtesy of Julia Mesplede, her first goal of the season. 

Vermont seized a 2-1 advantage just prior to the conclusion of the first period, as Oona Havana found the net with her first goal of the season. UConn led in shots 11-10 during the initial period. 

Vermont maintained the lead through the second period; however, UConn commanded significant possession in the offensive zone, outshooting the Catamounts 16-8 in that period. 

UConn struck back to equalize with a little over ten minutes remaining in the third period, as junior defender Meghane Duchesne-Chalifoux scored her second goal of the season, tying the game at two. 

Murdoch proceeded to net the decisive goal with seven minutes left in regulation, achieving her first career multi-goal game. Murdoch now holds a team-high nine goals for the season.
