A Teen’s Eye-Opening Journey: The Dark Side of Street Takeovers

Footage from Florida Highway Patrol shutting down a street takeover in Tampa depicts a young girl discovering in real-time the repercussions of joining the unlawful assembly. It’s likely she was aware that this was not the wisest choice, or else she and others present at the gathering would not have dispersed quickly upon the arrival of the officers.

Unfortunately for her, a trooper focused on her white Nissan Altima as she sped away from the parking lot where the takeover was taking place. Unable to escape the FHP vehicle, she experienced firsthand the effects of a PIT maneuver.

This PIT maneuver sent the Nissan swirling off the roadway and into a utility pole, crumpling the rear passenger door and deploying the curtain airbags on that side. Dad is definitely not going to be pleased dealing with that insurance claim, which is likely to be denied since she was engaging in a felony act.

Thanks to a recent statute in Florida, not only can participants of street takeovers face criminal charges, but so can bystanders. Other states are enacting similar legislation, providing law enforcement and prosecutors with additional tools to address these hazardous gatherings.

In this instance, the 18-year-old driver faced two felony accusations: Unlawful racing on a highway while partaking in a coordinated street takeover and aggravated fleeing to evade. She has a bright future ahead of her and is already burdened with these repercussions.

We cannot ascertain if she comprehended at that moment how significantly she had messed up. In the dashcam footage during her arrest, the young lady appears fairly composed. We have doubts, however, that she will remain as self-possessed once the full impact of the situation dawns on her.

Let this serve as a caution to others contemplating attending a street takeover in Florida: seek alternative activities. Authorities are intent on apprehending anyone attending these events, so we advise staying well clear of them.
