U.S. Travelers Required to Secure Digital Pass for Entry into the U.K.

Travelers from Tampa Bay aiming to enter or connect in the United Kingdom will be required to secure a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) starting January 8, 2025.

This new digital registration is a compulsory procedure costing £10 (slightly more than $12) and is being implemented for U.S. nationals as part of a wider update to U.K. immigration checks. Individuals can apply online or via the U.K.’s ETA application for iPhone or Android devices.

All individuals entering the U.K. must possess their own ETA, including minors (parents may apply on behalf of their children). In total, individuals from 48 non-European nations will need ETAs for their journeys.

This initiative resembles the upcoming European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which has faced delays but is expected to launch later in 2025.

The application process takes around 10 minutes and necessitates answering questions, uploading a photo, and providing an image of your passport. Authorizations are generally issued within three business days, though longer processing times may occur, according to the U.K.

Upon arrival, travelers will still need to undergo border security checks. This procedure is essential for all individuals either visiting the U.K. or transiting on U.K. territory.

The ETA is valid for multiple entries over a two-year period, allowing visits of up to six months, but is tied to your passport. Should you acquire a new passport during this two-year interval, a new ETA must be obtained.

Tampa International Airport provides two daily nonstop flights to London, with one to Heathrow and another to Gatwick. Travelers are advised to ensure they possess the correct documentation prior to departure.
