Vast Open Spaces: This image was captured in the Texas panhandle. Although this region features numerous distinct characteristics, it is predominantly comprised of expansive open areas. This is ranch land which may not appear overly scenic, yet I believe the photograph succeeds due to the striking contrast between the vibrant greens and earthy browns of the terrain against the stunning blue skies. A windmill can be observed on the horizon at the center of the image, and the simplistic arrangement of the few fluffy clouds adds charm to the scene. Photo by Gary Warren/ladailypost.com

Directly Ahead: The lines established by the straight roadway in this image construct a pleasing landscape composition. The absence of any distractions for miles except for the late afternoon sunlight, which forms patterns in the vast open expanse, adds character. A few hills in the distance along with the line of clouds and clear blue skies set a backdrop for this photograph of open areas and an elongated straight highway. While traveling, I am perpetually seeking that next photographic opportunity. The truth is, I notice far more chances and subjects to capture than we have time to indulge in during our journeys. We often say that my two-pound camera significantly slows down our travels because I’m always spotting something worth stopping for!

Occasionally, I find myself thinking that there’s “nothing out here” to shoot as we drive for miles. However, sometimes I manage to photograph a scene that appears rather unremarkable, and I am pleasantly astonished by the outcome.

At times, simplicity is the key in crafting a photograph. An image that is uncomplicated, possesses clarity, and displays clean lines is the finest means of showcasing a subject or scene. This subject may encompass a broad landscape or an intricate macro shot of a flower’s features.

As I contemplated today’s Post from the Road theme, I began searching through some of our travels for photos that exemplify the concept of simplicity being advantageous, and I successfully located several potential illustrations. For this entry, I am featuring five examples of this idea.

These images are from previous journeys, representing various locations and distinct seasons of the year, yet their efficacy in demonstrating that sometimes less is more remains unchanged.

Next time you embark on a journey and find yourself gazing out the window believing there’s “nothing out here,” I challenge you to examine a bit closer; there may be a subject awaiting your lens!

Editor’s note: Veteran Los Alamos photographer Gary Warren and his wife Marilyn are currently traveling throughout the country, capturing images which feature in the “Posts from the Road” series published in the Sunday edition of the Los Alamos Daily Post.

Shifting Weather: This image depicts a serene hill in Wyoming under dark and foreboding skies in the background. One can sense that a torrential summer downpour is moments away. The contrast in hue between the lush green and the stormy blue heavens is the initial aspect that captures your attention. Moreover, the train track that meanders across the landscape and is visible for only a short span adds another design element that enhances the composition. A solitary windmill on the right side of the photograph introduces yet another point of interest in this minimalist rendering. Photo by Gary Warren/ladailypost.com

Twilight: This photograph of a setting in northeastern New Mexico was captured after sunset while some light still lingered in the atmosphere. It was an extremely windy evening, and there wasn’t much to observe apart from one farmhouse near the center. Once again, the contrasting colors between the dark sky and the field of swaying grasses form this image. The gentle clouds drifting across the sky introduce additional elements that elevate this uncomplicated photograph. Photo by Gary Warren/ladailypost.com

The Open Highway: This image was captured between the Texas and New Mexico borders near the town of Dalhart, Texas, showcasing the highway that traverses the image, illustrating open spaces, with the exception of haystacks and related farm structures and equipment to the left, along with a lone silo on the right side of the highway. A few more elements populate this scene, along with the swirling clouds above, but there isn’t another vehicle in sight. This is precisely why I adore traveling the backroads throughout the western U.S. Photo by Gary Warren/ladailypost.com
