By securing a second place finish at the Section 5A True Team meet held at the University of Minnesota-Morris on Saturday, the Alexandria boys swimming and diving squad earned a place in the Class A True Team State Meet at the University of Minnesota.

On Saturday, Alexandria concluded the meet with 1,057 points, finishing just 24 points behind Melrose-Sauk Centre, taking second place on Jan. 11.

The team earned a wild card entry, qualifying for the Class A True Team State Meet.

Kathy Walker, the head coach of Alexandria, described Saturday’s performance for the Cardinals as ‘A well-rounded combination of champions and medalists with numerous personal bests.’

Kyler Kavanagh of Alexandria, the current Class A Diving True Team state champion and MSHSL Class A state champion, repeated his victory as the Section 5A true team champion with a score of 461.80.

Cooper Running achieved two first place victories for the Cards, winning both the 200 freestyle (1:47.92) and 100 freestyle (48.54). Andy Wacek took first in the 200 IM (2:06.29). Along with Adison Newman and Micah Kietzmann, Running and Wacek clinched the 200 freestyle relay title (1:32.18).

Alexandria is now poised to make its sixth consecutive appearance at the True Team State Meet, which is scheduled for Noon on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, in Minneapolis.

Prior to the true team state meet, Alexandria will host Fergus Falls at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
