Following my statement in September of the previous year that I would not pursue a 7th term in the Australian Parliament, I will be resigning as the Member for Maribyrnong and from the Australian Cabinet effective January 20th.
The upcoming Monday, January 20th, will mark my last day as the Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme and Government Services, as well as the Member for Maribyrnong, before I embark on my new position as Vice Chancellor and President of the University of Canberra.
This timing allows me to transition into my new role just as students begin their academic year in 2025. Furthermore, since my resignation comes within 120 days of a federal election, there will be no necessity for a byelection in Maribyrnong.
Having served six terms and over 17 years in the Australian Parliament has been an exceptional journey, and I depart knowing that I have put forth my utmost effort each and every day for the constituents of Maribyrnong and for all Australians. Leading the Federal Labor Party for six years has been a significant honor in my parliamentary service.
I express my gratitude to the residents of Maribyrnong and all Australians for their incredible support since 2007. Serving in this capacity has been a privilege, and I take pride in everything we have accomplished together.
This morning, the Prime Minister declared that Amanda Rishworth will take on the role of Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, while Dr. Anne Aly will assume the position of Minister Assisting the Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
As I mentioned in September, the establishment and reform of the NDIS has been one of my most treasured accomplishments in public service, and I am confident it will be well managed under a Labor Government. I want individuals with disabilities to recognize that they will continue to be a priority for this Government, just as they have been during my tenure as Minister.
Senator Katy Gallagher is set to become the Minister for Government Services, where she will supervise Services Australia, which I have had the distinct honor of managing and reforming following the fallout of the Liberals’ Robodebt Scheme disaster.
These appointments are all outstanding and highlight the strength and capability within the Albanese Labor Government.
On a concluding note, I am enthusiastic about the upcoming opportunities and eager to serve the best interests of Australia as Vice Chancellor of the University of Canberra, where I aim to advocate for all Australians, especially the students, staff, and Canberra community, who value education and desire for higher education in our nation to be as accessible and vibrant as its global counterparts.
