“Through Faithful Focus: Matthew Black’s Journey from College Student to Inspirational Photographer”

Some of the most prominent names in Christian music, such as For King and Country, Lecrae, Crowder, and Danny Gokey, have been photographed by Matthew Black, a junior majoring in broadcasting, digital media, and journalism at Cedarville University. Black’s journey as a performance photographer commenced in 2023 with a spontaneous chance to photograph Winter Jam in Tampa, Florida, close to his Spring Hill residence.

Black continues to manage his education alongside a flourishing freelance career, motivated by his commitment to capturing the ideal image. With numerous concert experiences under his belt, Black has had his work showcased by artists across significant social media platforms and within marketing initiatives.

By utilizing his expanding network of industry contacts, Black has sharpened his abilities in live performance photography and has refined his personal style. One of the many lessons he has acquired is the significance of networking, as many of his opportunities have emerged from a straightforward call or message.

One such initiative included collaborating with For King and Country over two consecutive evenings during their recent Unsung Hero Tour. Black was integrated with the national touring group, allowing him to capture moments that would be inaccessible had he merely attended their performances. The band’s attention was caught by Black’s photographic prowess, which resulted in his work being displayed on their Instagram account.

“Seeing my photos on their Instagram before a million viewers was unbelievable,” Black stated. “However, I reminded myself that the aim is not recognition. It’s about supporting their ministry with my artistic contributions.”

As Black builds his portfolio and contacts, he remains committed to his ultimate objective of aiding the ministries of Christian artists. Every photograph he captures narrates the artist’s story and inspires audiences to embrace the message of their music.

Black’s experiences have instilled in him the virtue of patience in awaiting the perfect shot. He has also acquired the ability to reflect each artist’s style while preserving his distinctive aesthetic, demonstrating his creative adaptability.

While Black is gaining experience on the job, one of his professors recognizes an emerging talent in the field of photo communication.

“Even before Matt officially began his studies at Cedarville in 2023, he was already forging connections with individuals both on and off campus to gain experience as a content creator, expand his network, and refine his skills,” remarked Sean O’Connor, assistant professor of broadcasting, digital media, and journalism. “The opportunities that God has provided for him over the past year and a half have been truly remarkable. I eagerly anticipate what comes next for him!”

Throughout his two years as a concert photographer, Black has absorbed valuable lessons and gathered experiences that will enhance his craft. Even as a student, Black is making significant progress as a professional within the realm of performance photography.

Currently, Black is working at the ARK Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky, alongside the Christian band TrueSong as they prepare for the 2025 40 Days and 40 Nights Christian Music Festival.
