ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan men’s track and field squad will stay at home for the second consecutive meet, organizing the Simmons-Harvey Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 18) at the U-M Indoor Track Building. Field competitions will commence at 10:30 a.m. and track competitions will start at 11:30 a.m.

Notes

• The Wolverines will face Big Ten rivals Michigan State and Purdue in their sole scored competition of the regular season.

Trent McFarland has begun the year 2025 with remarkable speed, clocking a mile at 3:58.71 to secure first place at the Wolverine Invitational on Jan. 11. This performance ranks No. 10 on the program’s all-time list, No. 1 in the Big Ten, and No. 5 in the NCAA. McFarland was awarded Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week on Wednesday (Jan. 15) for his achievement. Camden Law also participated in the mile, achieving third place with a time of 4:02.83, improving his previous best by nearly seven seconds. His time positions him at No. 21 in the NCAA and No. 4 in the conference.

• Freshman Brendan Herger triumphed in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:49.29, marking the No. 9 time in the program’s history and the No. 2 time in both the conference and NCAA.

• In the 60-meter dash, Corey Royster recorded a time of 6.79 seconds to reach the finals, falling just 0.001 seconds short of equaling the No. 9 time on the program’s performers list. Royster finished sixth in the finals with a time of 6.83.

Liam Kinney and John McNeil both made their inaugural appearances for the Maize and Blue, winning their individual events. Kinney cleared a height of 5.00m (16 feet, 4.75 inches) in the pole vault, while McNeil cleared 2.11m (6-11) in the high jump.

• The throwers displayed a strong performance, achieving five top-three results across two events. Zane Forist secured second place in the weight throw (18.91m/62-0.50) before winning the shot put with a personal best of 17.89m (58-8.5). Forist’s weight throw distance ranks No. 18 in the Big Ten, while his shot put distance is No. 10.

Eli Winter claimed victory in the weight throw with a distance of 19.62m (64-4.5), while Jake Steslicki finished third (18.55m, 60-10.5) — marking the No. 8 and No. 22 performances in the league, respectively. Freshman Josh Huisman took second place in the shot put (16.94m, 55-7.00) to rank No. 16 in the Big Ten.
