As climate change escalates and severe weather occurrences become commonplace, a recent investigation spearheaded by the American space agency, Nasa, verifies that the Earth’s water cycle is transforming in extraordinary manners.
This transformation is predominantly credited to human endeavors, including agriculture that could affect ecosystems across various regions of the globe, having profound consequences for the inhabitants of these areas.
The water cycle guarantees the constant availability of freshwater, essential for the existence of all living beings. Flora, fauna, and humans depend on freshwater for hydration, agricultural production, and ecosystem health.
It perpetually refreshes rivers, lakes, and underground aquifers through precipitation, assuring a sustainable source of freshwater for drinking, irrigation, and industrial applications, which is crucial for the effective functioning of essential systems.
Sujay Kumar, a research scientist at Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Center and co-author of the study remarked, “We have established through data assimilation that human influence on the global water cycle is more pronounced than we previously believed.”
The results published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concentrated on three distinct types of shifts or alterations in the cycle: firstly, a reduction in the availability of water within a groundwater reservoir; secondly, a modification in seasonal patterns, such as the typical growing season commencing earlier in the year or earlier melt of snow; and thirdly, a frequency increase in extreme events, such as “100-year floods” occurring more often.
They collected remote sensing information from 2003 to 2020 from multiple Nasa satellite sources. The evaluation is based on nearly two decades of satellite observations.
Augusto Getirana, a research scientist and another co-author of the research, stated that satellite observations facilitated an accurate simulation of continental water fluxes and storages globally.
The latest findings validate that Earth system models intended to simulate the future global water cycle must adapt to incorporate the ongoing influences of human activities.
“We aspire that this study will act as a blueprint for enhancing our assessment of water resource variability and strategizing for sustainable resource management, particularly in regions experiencing these changes most acutely,” Wanshu Nie, the lead author of the paper, expressed.
