Ben Meehan Throws His Hat in the Ring for the 2025 Hobey Baker Award

LOWELL, Mass. – Graduate student Ben Meehan (Walpole, Mass.) from the UMass Lowell ice hockey squad has been selected as a candidate for the 2025 Hobey Baker Award, which is given annually to the premier college hockey player in the nation.

During this season, the seasoned defenseman has compiled 11 points, including two goals (one being the game-winner) and nine assists, while participating in all 21 of the team’s matches. He is currently tied for second in assists and fourth in points on the team, needing only six additional points to match his career-best of 17. He additionally has 31 blocked shots, placing him at the team forefront along with a +1 rating.

Eligibility for the award requires nominees to exemplify the exceptional character qualities of the award’s namesake, Hobey Baker. An iconic American figure, Baker served as a World War I fighter pilot and was recognized as America’s greatest amateur athlete in his era, excelling at both hockey and football at Princeton University. Nominees must exhibit strong character both on the ice and off, contribute to their team’s integrity, and display outstanding abilities in all aspects of the game. Academic performance and sportsmanship are also factors considered.

The second phase of fan voting will showcase the Top Ten Hobey Baker finalists starting March 19 and concluding March 30. The votes from fans will represent a portion of the overall tally in each phase to determine this year’s award winner.

The victor of the 2025 Hobey Baker Award will be announced from a select group of three Hobey Hat Trick finalists on Friday, April 11, 2025, during the NCAA Frozen Four Championship in St. Louis, Missouri. The award presentation will be aired nationally on NHL Network and will be streamed live at hobeybaker.com.
